  • Dr. Power is an anesthesiologist and commander with the Royal Canadian Medical Service. Listen to his exciting stories and insights on combat trauma!

Suturing Workshop – October 10th , 2018

  • 6:00- 8:00 pm in Rm 2240
  • Surgery and emergency medicine residents will be going over suturing basics and demonstrating common suturing techniques. Students will have an opportunity to practice on skin analogs.

  • Dr. Chuck Su will be joining us to share his experience working as a Family Doctor in the Emergency Department.  This is a wonderful opportunity to ask questions and learn about the training and practice of family physicians in emergency medicine.

Dr. Shahbaz Syed

  • Dr. Syed is an ER doc at TOH who has completed a fellowship in digital scholarship
  • He will talk about the emergence of Free Open Access Medicine (FOAMed) and how to assess the validity, accuracy and relevance of what you read on sites like AliEM or LifeInTheFastLane.

Forensic Medicine -November 22nd, 2018

Dr. Kari Sampsel

  • 12:30- 1:30 pm in Rm 2003
  • Dr. Sampsel is one of the few holders of a Forensic Medicine Fellowship title in Canada.
  • In this talk, Dr. Sampsel will speak about the various initiatives she is involved with, her role as a coroner, how to properly fill out a death certificate, as well as interesting cases she has encountered in her practice.

MSK Exam Radiology Workshop -November 26nd, 2018

Dr. Kevin Smit

  • 4:00- 6:00 pm in Rm 2003
  • Dr. Smit will be running this session based on the radio objectives from Foundations unit. Although we can’t promise the session will be comprehensive as not every detail will be covered, we can promise that it will be a great way to review some of the major radio concepts to get ready for your exam!

  • Dr. Kennedy will share personal experiences from overseas and address the inner workings of a trauma unit and EM in a war zone.

Rural Emergency Medicine – November 8th, 2017

  • This talk will address the differences between Rural and Academic EM, the pros and cons of working in a rural hospital, supports available in the community, and differences between the 3yr CCFP (EM) and 5yr FRCP (EM) streams as they apply to rural medicine practice.

  • Each speaker will be sharing their research and career experience as clinician scientists. Tano (4th year student) will be talking about his involvement in research and his future plans.

Concussion in Pediatrics (March 30th, 2016)
Dr. Zemek

  • Dr. Roger Zemek is a pediatric emergency physician as well as the Pediatric Concussion Guideline Development Chair for the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation and the Diagnosis and Early Education Working Group Co-Chair for Ontario Concussion/Mild Traumatic Brain Injury. He will speak about pediatric emergency medicine, pediatric concussions, and recent research initiatives in concussion.

Disaster Medicine (April 12, 2016)
Dr. Richard Dionne

  • Dr. Dionne is an EM physician involved with the Emergency Pre-Hospital Care & Disaster Fellowship that is offered here at the University of Ottawa. He will be talking about the key aspects of risk assessment in disaster scenarios

Pediatric Emergency Medicine (April 14, 2016)
Dr. Schneeweiss

  • Dr. Schneeweiss is a pediatric EM physician who works at SickKids and also holds positions as Associate Dean of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for U of T, as Director of Education in the Division of Paediatric Medicine at SickKids, and as Continuing Professional Development Educator with the RCPSC. Dr. Kari Sampsel

  • 12:30-1:30pm in Room 2241 (Histology Room)
  • Dr. Kari Sampsel is one of the EM program directors here and is also the director of the Sexual Assault and Partner Abuse Care Program. She also did a forensic medicine fellowship in Australia and is one of the few holders of this title in Canada. In this talk Dr. Sampsel will speak about her path to becoming involved in forensics, the various initiatives she is involved with including the Sexual Assault and Partner Abuse Care Program, her role as a coroner, as well as interesting cases she has encountered in her practice.
